The short answer

  • Without a plan you keep: Live View (up to 10 minutes at a time) and real-time alerts [S3][S4].
  • Without a plan you lose: every recording. Ring says a subscription is required to review recorded video, and events are only recorded after you subscribe [S4]. Ring's tech specs list no memory card to fall back on [S1].
  • The cheapest plan that brings recordings back is Ring Solo: $4.99/month or $49.99/year for one device [S2]. Ring Multi ($9.99/month or $99.99/year) covers every Ring device at one location [S2].

Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) is now called Wired Doorbell 4K Pro

Ring's product page answers this directly: asked what the difference is between Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) and Wired Doorbell 4K Pro, Ring says "Nothing. We changed the name, but the features remain the same." [S1] If your box, receipt or app says Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen), everything on this page applies.

What Ring's FAQ says about plans

Ring's page says the doorbell "works great without a subscription", but that a Ring Protect plan "unlocks additional features like 180-day video history, Package Alerts, Doorbell Calls, and advanced security features" [S1]. In other words, the doorbell rings and you can answer it live, but nothing is saved without a plan [S4].

Wiring requirements

  • Ring requires a standard doorbell system, a Ring plug-in adapter or a Ring hardwired transformer (both sold separately) supplying 16 or 24 VAC, 10 to 40VA (30 to 40VA recommended), 50/60Hz, or 24 VDC 12W [S1].
  • Ring says not to use halogen or garden-lighting transformers [S1].
  • The box includes a Chime Kit Mini, which installs at your existing chime [S1].

Wi-Fi and video

  • Wi-Fi 6, dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Ring recommends at least 15 Mbps upload for 4K, and says video quality adjusts to your bandwidth [S1].
  • 4K video at 2880 x 2880 with a 1:1 aspect ratio, a 140° by 140° field of view and up to 10x Enhanced Zoom [S1].

The free trial and what happens when it ends

  • A free 30-day Ring Protect trial starts when you set up the device, unless your location already has a plan [S2].
  • If you don't subscribe before the trial or plan ends, Ring says you lose your stored video recordings and they can't be retrieved [S2]. Download anything you want to keep first.
  • More detail on every Ring device: what still works on Ring without Ring Protect.
