Google Nest Cam (battery) without Google Home Premium: what still works
With no Google Home Premium (formerly Nest Aware) plan, the Nest Cam (battery) keeps live view, person, animal, vehicle and motion alerts, and 3 hours of event video. 30 days of history costs $10/month or $100/year.

The short answer
- Without a plan you keep: live view, Two-way Talk and Listen, activity zones, camera automations, and person, animal, vehicle and motion alerts [S2].
- Without a plan you get only 3 hours of history. Event recordings of up to 5 minutes are kept for 3 hours, then they're gone [S2][S3].
- Google Home Premium Standard ($10/month or $100/year) keeps 30 days of event history [S2][S5]. Advanced ($20/month or $200/year) keeps 60 days and can add 10 days of 24/7 video history if the camera is wired to power [S2][S3][S5].
What works with no plan
No-plan score: 3 of 5
| Feature | With no plan | Details and source |
|---|---|---|
| Live view | Yes | Google's feature table for Nest Cam (battery) marks Live view and Two-way Talk and Listen as included with no subscription [S2]. The Google Store page also lists 24/7 live view alongside the free event history [S4]. |
| Local recording | Limited | There's no memory card slot in Google's tech specs [S1]. Google says that if your Wi-Fi goes down or there's a power outage, the camera stores up to one hour of recorded events in its local memory, which you can see once it's back online [S4]. It doesn't record to storage you own in normal use, so this is limited. |
| Motion alerts | Yes | Motion alerts are marked as included with no subscription [S2]. |
| Person detection | Yes | Person, animal and vehicle alerts are marked as included with no subscription [S2]. |
| Clip history (24 hours+) | Limited | Event recordings of up to 5 minutes are kept for 3 hours with no subscription [S2][S3]. Anything older than 3 hours isn't kept without a plan, so this fails our 24-hour check. |
What needs a paid plan
- 30 days of event video history (Standard) or 60 days (Advanced) [S2][S5].
- 24/7 video history, stored for 10 days, with the Advanced plan, and only when the camera is connected to a power source [S2][S3].
- Familiar face detection, alerts with zoomed-in previews, and smoke or carbon monoxide alarm sound detection (US only) [S2].
- Garage door detection (US only), emergency calling (US only) and the Help me create automation feature [S2].
What the plan costs
| Plan | Covers | Price | 1 year | 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Home Premium Standard [S5] | all devices in one home | $10.00/month or $100.00/year | $100.00 yearly $120.00 monthly | $300.00 yearly $360.00 monthly |
| Google Home Premium Advanced [S5] | all devices in one home | $20.00/month or $200.00/year | $200.00 yearly $240.00 monthly | $600.00 yearly $720.00 monthly |

It keeps up to an hour of events during an outage
The Nest Cam (battery) has no memory card slot [S1]. What it does have is a fallback: Google says that if your Wi-Fi goes down or there's a power outage, the camera automatically stores up to one hour of recorded events in its local memory, and you can see what happened once things are running again [S4]. That's a backup for outages, not a way to keep footage long-term without a plan, which is why it counts as limited in our score.
24/7 recording needs power and the Advanced plan
On battery power, the camera only has event video history, even with a subscription [S3]. To get 24/7 video history, Google says the Nest Cam (battery) must be connected to a power source [S3], and the Advanced plan is the one that includes 10 days of 24/7 history [S2]. The Google Store says continuous recording requires wiring the camera with the Weatherproof Cable, sold separately [S4].
Some Gemini features aren't offered for this model
On Google's feature table for Nest Cam (battery), AI notifications, AI descriptions, Home Brief and Ask Home video history search aren't marked as included on any plan, including Advanced [S2]. Help me create is marked as included with Standard and Advanced [S2]. Check the table for your model before paying for Advanced for its AI features.
Nest Aware is now Google Home Premium
Google's help pages say Nest Aware is now Google Home Premium, a whole-home subscription [S2]. One plan covers the Nest cameras and doorbells in your home [S5].
Power and setup
- Battery: a built-in rechargeable 6 Ah, 3.65V lithium-ion battery, charged through a magnetic pogo-pin connector with the included cable and 7.5W power adapter [S1].
- Mounting: it attaches magnetically to metal, to the included wall plate, or sits on a surface. It also has 1/4" threading for compatible third-party mounts [S1].
- Weather: rated IP54, which Google describes as able to withstand dust, rain and snow [S1].
- Video: up to 1080p at 30 frames per second with HDR, a 130° diagonal view, and night vision up to 20 ft [S1].
- App: setup uses the Google Home app, and features like notifications and video history need working internet and Wi-Fi [S1][S4].
